Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar (1906–1981) is revered as the Father of Himachal Pradesh — the visionary leader who brought the hill districts of northern India together to form the state of Himachal Pradesh on 25 January 1971.

When India gained independence in 1947, Parmar played a pivotal role in merging 30 small princely hill states of Punjab Hills into Himachal Pradesh — first as a Chief Commissioner’s Province on 15 April 1948, then as a Part C State, and finally as a full-fledged state on 25 January 1971.
